Husaria jump into third place with 46-0 victory over Torpedy
Marcin Kaim scored three times and Piotr Kaczmarczyk threw three touchdown passes as Husaria Szczecin routed a shorthanded Torpedy Lódz team 46-0 on Saturday afternoon to move into sole possession of the final playoff spot in the PLFA II North Division.
The two teams came into the contest with identical records of 1-2, good enough for a tie with the 1. KFA Fireballs Wielkopolska for third place in the North. Husaria was the only team of the three to win on Saturday, putting them a game ahead of the other two. They stand little chance, however, of catching the two teams ahead of them, as both the Warsaw Spartans and the Plock Mustangs have yet to lose this season.
Only 18 players made the long trip to Szeczcin for Torpedy, and they represented themselves well for three quarters. The defense was especially strong, allowing only a second-quarter touchdown in the first three frames. However, Husaria still led 19-0 at halftime thanks to a short interception return for a touchdown by Krzysztof Duda and a 90-yard punt return by Kaim.
The heat finally caught up with Torpedy in the fourth quarter, however, as Husaria was able to put four more touchdowns on the board in the final frame. Two of those were touchdown passes from Kaczmarczyk to Kaim, while Mateusz Wiechcinski and Mateusz Dubicki also got their names on the scoresheet.
Husaria now control their own destiny in the playoff hunt, although both of their remaining games are on the road. The first one will take place in Warsaw, against the Werewolves on July 24. Torpedy, meanwhile, will take on the Fireballs a day earlier in Lódz, in a game that will virtually be an elimination battle.
