The Helsinki Roosters (Maple League – Finnish top division) have signed quarterback Robert Johnson for the 2012 season.
Robert Johnson (6’2”, 218 lb) is returning to the Helsinki Roosters after a two year absence. He spent the 2011 season with the Catania Elephants(IFL – Italian top division) helping the team reach the Italian semifinals. He threw for 2,344 yards (170 of 261) and 29 TDs averaging 260.4 yards per game. He also carried the ball 77 times for 546 yard scoring 12 TDs.
In 2010, Robert led the Porvoo Butchers to the Maple League championship title (Finnish top division) with his outstanding play. In fact, it was his second Finnish championship in four years. He won it with the Butchers in 2007 as well. In the other two he led his team (Roosters) to the championship game (2008, 2009).
He led the league in passing (regular season + playoffs) in both 2008 (5,998 yards) and 2009 (3,655 yards) and in fact his stats from 2008 are a record for quarterbacks in Finland. He threw for 69 touchdowns, the highest total in Maple League history. In his first year in Finland (2007) he was the quarterback for the championship-winning Porvoo Butchers.
A Georgia native, Johnson had an outstanding career at Texas Tech. In 2006 he was named 2nd Team All-Big XII. He caught more than 100 yards in receptions against Ok. St. and SMU;. Against SMU he had 15 catches breaking the school record of 14 catches by Wes Welker (New England Patriots). He came to Texas Tech as a quarterback but switched to wide receiver and made an immediate impact leading the team with 67 receptions for 951 yards and four touchdowns. This earned him All-Big 12 honors and he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
