Søllerød Gold Diggers win the EFAF Cup 2012!

The EFAF Cup final was played on Saturday between the Danish rivals Triangle Razorbacks and Søllerød Gold Diggers.

No Danish team has ever won the EFAF Cup, so it was a surprise to see not only one, but two Danish teams in this year's final game.

The two teams know each other well. They have met in the last four Mermaid Bowls (the final game of the Danish tournament), resulting in two wins each. But this was the first time the two teams meet in the EFAF Cup.

The game was played at the home field of Triangle Razorbacks in front of a crowd of 1,300 people, with another 3,000 people following the live stream on the internet.

First half of the game was even. The two teams based their plays on a lot of long pass plays mixed with heavy runs. The teams exchanged scores and the score was 14-14 at half time.

Søllerød Gold Diggers started with the ball in the 3rd quarter and put together a good drive, but had to settle for a 32 yard field goal. On the ensuing kickoff Gold Diggers kicked a surprising onside kick down the middle, which they recovered. The Gold Diggers offense thus went back on the field and put together a 7 play drive including a successful fake punt on a 4th and 1. The final play of the drive was a 12 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good for a 24-21 lead to the Gold Diggers.

The Razorbacks responded by putting together a long drive resulting in a 2 yard touchdown run bringing the game within 3 points, but the Gold Diggers put another touchdown on the board on the next drive, giving them a 31-21 lead.

Entering the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead the Gold Diggers out together some long drives, and the Razorbacks were unable to score on the Gold Diggers defense. The game ended with a 31-21 win for the Søllerød Gold Diggers. Quarterback Alexander Cimadon of Søllerød Gold Diggers was chosen as Game MVP.
