Seahawks in playoffs, Lowlanders relegated after 68-0 massacre

With the Gdynia Seahawks finding their stride in the second half of the season and the Bialystok Lowlanders limping into the final game, the home fans had reason to be optimistic that their Seahawks would secure the fourth playoff spot on Saturday in Gdynia. They ended up doing so with ease, after Luke Zetazate's record 8th touchdown pass completed the scoring at 68-0.

The Lowlanders finished the season in last place with a 1-8 record, meaning that they will be relegated to PLFA II in 2012. Bialystok spent both the 2008 and 2010 seasons in the second division, climbing up into PLFA I after each one. Their stays at the top have not been particularly enjoyable, however, as they went the entire 2009 season without a victory and were outscored by 351 points in nine games this year.

The Seahawks were never threatened in the season finale, going up 27-0 at the end of a quarter of play and 48-0 by halftime. Peter Plesa continued his fine season with a pair of touchdown receptions in the first quarter, and Zetazate also found Sebastian Krzysztofek twice for scores. Maciej Siemaszko had two touchdowns as well, although one of his came on a long interception return.

The Seahawks finished the season with a 6-3 record, beating all six teams they finished ahead of and losing to the other three playoff teams. They will play the Wroclaw Crew in the first semifinal game, on Saturday, July 2. The Crew demolished the Seahawks 62-7 in their May 7 regular-season battle. The game is a rematch of one of last season's semifinals, a game that was also won emphatically by the Crew, by a score of 49-0. Kickoff for the first semifinal is set for 1 PM.
