Wroclaw Crew finish off perfect season with 29-6 defeat of Kozly

In 2008 Kozly Poznan scored one of the biggest upsets in PLFA history, beating the Wroclaw Crew 8-6. They were not able to duplicate the feat on Sunday afternoon in Wroclaw, however, falling 29-6 against a much different Crew. In fact, it is a team that now can be called perfect, after finishing the season with nine wins against exactly zero defeats.

Both teams came into the game knowing that their positions in the table were not going to change much, and the Crew rested quarterback Justin Walz as a result. That fact did not mean the game was not a heated one, however, with a brawl on the field leading to an ejection on both sides. Maciej Wlodarczyk, the Wroclaw player who was tossed, will not play in the first round of the playoffs as a result.
Playing the solid defense for which they are known, Kozly fared better than any other team did this year in holding the mighty Crew offense to its lowest point total of the season (it didn't hurt them that Walz was on the bench, of course). In fact Kozly won the second half 6-2, during which Filip Kloskowski returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown. The Crew's 2 points were noteworthy for not being a safety, but in fact a two-point touchdown following Pawel Swiatek's return of the blocked PAT that followed the score.

Despite the strong showing by Poznan in the second half, the Crew went into the locker room with a comfortable 27-0 lead. Mark Philmore returned a punt 70 yards in the first quarter to open the scoring, and he then threw a touchdown pass to Michal Pawlowski in the second quarter to make it 13-0. Jakub Placzek and Deante Battle added scoring runs for Wroclaw.

Poznan finished the season at 3-6, in a tie for 6th place with the Bielawa Owls. The Crew, meanwhile, have matched the regular season feat of last year's titleholders, the Wroclaw Devils, and will now enter the postseason tournament as the favorites for the title. They will play in the semifinals at home, on Saturday, July 2, against the Gdynia Seahawks, a team they blew out earlier in the season and in last year's semifinal as well.
