Spartans win third straight on the road, defeat Torpedy 25-6
The Warsaw Spartans opened up the inside track to the top seed in the playoffs on Sunday afternoon in Lódz, winning their third consecutive game on the road to open the season with a 25-6 defeat of Torpedy. Artur Makara provided the fireworks for the visitors, breaking two short receptions for touchdowns at key moments in the game.
The Spartans will be at home for the rest of the regular season, and possibly for the playoffs as well if they keep winning. They share first place with the Plock Mustangs, who are also 3-0. The two teams are two games ahead in the race for the top spot, and so their meeting on July 23 in Warsaw will probably decide the division title.
Makara had the only points of the first quarter, taking in a short J Stuart Lund pass and weaving through the defense for a 49-yard touchdown. Tomasz Baranski extended the lead to 13-0 in the second quarter before Torpedy struck back with an Emil Sowinski touchdown reception that cut the halftime lead to 13-6.
Makara was back at it again in the third quarter, however, this time going 35 yards to make it 19-6 for Warsaw. Lund then capped the scoring with his third touchdown pass of the game, a 16-yarder to Robert Poswiata.
Lódz falls to 1-2 with the defeat, and they currently sit in a three-way tie for third place in the PLFA II North Division. Torpedy have rallied to make the playoffs from similar positions in the past, and they will get a chance to climb back to .500 on July 9, when they will travel to Szczecin to take on Husaria. The Spartans are next in action the same day, hosting the 1. KFA Fireballs Wielkopolska.
