Fireballs no match for Spartans this year, fall 42-6 in the capital

Last year the 1. KFA Fireballs Wielkopolska met the Warsaw Spartans in the wild-card round of the PLFA II playoffs, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 22-18 victory. They beat the Spartans in a close game on the last week of the season the year before that as well, but the teams' 2011 clash was a much different story, with the Spartans dominating the visiting team 42-6 under the lights on Saturday in Warsaw.

The Spartans have not lost in four tries this season, and they boast a 4-0 record that has them in a first-place tie with the Plock Mustangs. Warsaw clinched a playoff spot with the victory, and they will enter the playoffs as no lower than the number two seed from the North Division. They face the Mustangs in the next round of games, in a meeting that will determine the division winner and who gets the first-round playoff bye.

The Spartans got on the board first on Saturday evening on an 11-yard touchdown reception by Witold Wolny that put them up 6-0 after a quarter of play. Michal Binek's long touchdown reception tied the game early in the second, but the Spartans would get two more touchdowns before the break to lead 21-6.

The Fireballs had a chance to make it a game again in the third quarter, reaching the Spartan four-yard line with a first-and-goal opportunity. A fumble on the first-down play turned the ball over, however, and the Fireballs lost all momentum at that point. The Spartans gave the home fans a thrill twice more in the third quarter, with Lukasz Kolodziejczyk running back a punt for a score and Tomasz Ochnio hauling in a 46-yard touchdown catch.

The Spartans will stay at home for their last two games, with the big clash against the Mustangs coming on July 23. The 1-3 Fireballs, meanwhile, are now a game behind Husaria Szczecin for the last playoff spot in the North. They will also play next on July 23, on the road at Torpedy Lódz.
