Fourth-quarter outburst propels Knights past Saints 46-19

The Czestochowa Saints had their best chance of getting a first-ever win at home on Sunday afternoon, trailing by only a point going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the PLFA II debutantes, the Krakow Knights had other ideas, exploding for 32 points in the final frame en route to a 46-19 victory.

The difference between the two halves was astounding, with only 6 points scored before the intermission and 59 after it. Trailing 6-0 in the third quarter, the Saints took a shock lead when Kamil Kaniowski took a Michal Chochlinski pass 75 yards for a touchdown and Bartlomiej Aulak converted the extra point.

The lead didn't last long, however, as Spaniard Angel Clemente Hernandez hit Piotr Kozub for a 15-yard touchdown. The Knights converted the two-point try to go ahead by 7, but Czestochowa quickly came back with a short touchdown run by Chochlinski to get within a point. This time Aulak's attempt did not find its way through the uprights, and Krakow led 14-13 after three quarters.

It was then that the game came apart for the home team, starting with Krzysztof Kania's short touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. He took in the two-point try as well, and then scored two more after Lukasz Sember's 40-yard interception return for a touchdown. Even when the Saints scored a touchdown of their own on another long Chochlinski pass, the Knights were able to score a two-point defensive touchdown on Czestochowa's failed conversion attempt.

Clemente and Kozub hooked up again for a 50-yarder to close the scoring for the Knights, who now sport a record of 3-1. That is good enough for second place in the South Division, a half-game ahead of the Ruda Slaska Warriors. Krakow will look to maintain that advantage in their next game, on the road against the Tychy Falcons on July 23. The winless Falcons will also be Czestochowa's next opponent, in Tychy on July 16. One of those teams will get its first victory ever in that game.
