Kozly free agent surprise not enough as Poznan falls to Seahawks 48-6

Earlier this week Kozly Poznan, the only winless team remaining in the Topliga, shocked the Polish football world with three big free agent signings. Mark Philmore and Deante Battle made returns to Poland in blue and white, along with newcomer Johnny Edwards IV, by traveling to Gdynia to face the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon. Still, the result was more of the same for Kozly, who fell to 0-4 after a 48-6 victory for Gdynia. Sebastian Krzysztofek scored three touchdowns for the Seahawks.

Poznan played the Seahawks tough in a very quick first quarter, sticking with a primarily run-based attack even with their new additions. Kozly received the opening kickoff, and drive quickly down the field, picking up chunks of yardage using play-fakes and misdirection. The Seahawks defense stiffened in the red zone, however, and Poznan's field goal attempt on the opening drive sailed wide left. Gdynia then took the ball quickly back the other way, and the former MVP finished off the opening Seahawks drive with his first score, a one-yard plunge to give Gdynia a 7-0 lead at the end of a quarter of play.

Kozly were unable to duplicate the success of their opening drive for the rest of the half, likely due to a combination of very little practice time spent together and strong play by an experienced Gdynia defense. The Seahawks offense continued to assert throughout the second quarter, seemingly moving the ball at will on their way to three more touchdowns. The highlight was a 41-yard scamper by quarterback Kyle McMahon, who also threw for three scores on the afternoon.

Early in the third quarter it became apparent that there was Kozly comeback in the cards, and that Gdynia would go to 6-1 all-time against Poznan. McMahon hit Marcin Bluma for a long touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, and capped off the scoring for Gdynia by rolling to his right and launching a spectacular heave across his body to Krzysztofek. Kozly found some consolation in the middle of it all, however, when Tomasz Moruszewicz evaded four tacklers for a 31-yard touchdown run.

Fortunately for Poznan, there is still ample time to get their season on track, as the AZS Silesia Rebels and Krakow Tigers continue to lose games as well. Kozly are currently just a game behind both of those teams, and they will welcome the Rebels to Poznan next Saturday, April 28. The Seahawks will be on the road in Krakow the next day, taking on the Tigers and awaiting the result from Wroclaw, where the other two teams battling for the top spot in the Topliga will do battle.
